Working from home is a wonderful choice for me, one that I smile about everyday. But I didn’t realize until this month how good it is for my health. In all my years of going to classrooms or offices on a daily basis, there’s never been a year when I wasn’t sick with a cold or flu at least twice. In 2007, my first full year of working from home, colds and flus were nowhere to be seen. Yaaay!
Now, I am not hiding out. I meet with folks quite often at coffee shops and restaurants. But what I don’t have is unnecessary interaction with people I don’t need to meet, like 90 office colleagues in the shared kitchen or conference room. I also avoid the exponentially yucky thought of all the bugs their families gave them (90 times families =…), and thus they brought to the office as well.
Don’t get me wrong. Social interaction is great - I love it and look forward to it. It’s all the extra, not-really-social, and forced interaction, so normal in office life, that gives me a greater chance of getting sick. That, I really don’t need.
Ahh, home sweet home.
